Teaching Progression - Phase III - VI - Latin

Bill & Carol Goss

Phase III

Jive

  1. Basic Rock (Can be done in BFLY)
  2. Fallaway Rock (Done in CP-SCP more difficult)
  3. RF Turning Fallaway (They learn RF Fallaway in waltz first)
  4. LF Turning Fallaway
  5. Throwaway (Beginning position like the Fallaway Rock)
  6. Link Rocks (Like the Reverse of a Throwaway)

The following figures vary in timing from the above standard

  1. Jive walks
  2. Swivel walks
  3. Suzie Q (after swivel walks because of swiveling action)

The last two figures above are in the multi-rhythm, listing.

Cha Cha and Rumba

  1. Cucaracha (Found in Multi-rhythm)
  2. Kiki Walk
  3. Circle Away and together with Kiki walk action (not found in Phase III, but a useful teaching technique)
  4. Lariat (W uses the circle action from above, man the cucaracha)
  5. Serpiente (Found in Multi-rhythm)

The following figures all have basic rumba timing and similar action.

  1. Basic
  2. Open Break (W does basic action, M simply reverses)
  3. Fence Line (Bodies stay more together)
  4. New Yorker (Taught in conjunction with #8 opening body)
  5. Time Step (Misplaced - should be in this Phase, bodies stay closed)
  6. Hand-to-Hand (Taught in conjunction with #10 opening body)
  7. Shoulder-to-Shoulder (W time step, M reverse)
  8. Spot Turn (The turning action puts it at the end of the sequence)
  9. Whip (Found in multi-rhythm, turn puts it at end of sequence)

Phase IV

Jive

  1. Right to Left (Most similar to throwaway)
  2. Left to Right (Most similar to Link Rock)
  3. Windmill (Most similar to Turning Fallaway)
  4. Change Hands behind Back (Most similar to Turning Fallaway with hands)
  5. Spanish Arms (Most similar to Fallaway for Man, W's part difficult)

Following figures vary from basic timing

  1. Chicken Walks
  2. Shag (Hop puts it into last in sequence)

Cha Cha and Rumba

  1. Time Step (Should be Phase III)
  2. Spot and Time (Combination of two known figures)
  3. Alemana (From a basic) Is this an underarm turn? (Should do in both directions. It is almost a spot and time with arms)
  4. Fan
  5. Alemana from Fan (2 measure move)
  6. Hockey Stick (From same starting position as #5)
  7. Chase (4 measure move)
  8. Peek-a-boo (Variation of above)
  9. Parallel Chase (Varsouvienne puts it near end of sequence and it is often done in transition)
  10. Triple Cha Forward and Back (Timing puts it at end of sequence)

Phase V

Jive

  1. American Spin (Only figure with basic timing)
  2. Whip (Whip Turn is there a difference?)
  3. Whip Throwaway (Variation of above)
  4. Continuous Whip (Variation of #2)
  5. Stop & Go
  6. Sailor's Shuffles (Correct footwork is quite tricky)
  7. Flick into Breaks (Length of figure)

Cha Cha and Rumba

  1. Progressive Walk (Misplaced should be with Kiki Walk)
  2. Natural Top (Related to Whip Turn above)
  3. Open Hip Twist
  4. Closed Hip Twist (Is hip twist different from these two?)
  5. Crab Walks
  6. Aida
  7. Switch (Often follows Aida)
  8. Switch Rock (Variation of above)
  9. Stop & Go Hockey Stick (Related to Stop & Go)
  10. Cross Basics (In all positions, including transition skaters)
  11. Sweethearts
  12. Turkish Towel (Misplaced, should be here, it is a switched sex sweetheart with arms)
  13. Cubans
  14. Double Cubans (Variation of above)
  15. Tornillo Wheel (W's part puts it near end)
  16. Ballerina Wheel (Misplaced, should be here, similar to Tornillo)
  17. La Suizas (Hop puts it at end)

Samba

  1. Basic
  2. Samba Whisk (Balance)
  3. Samba Walk
  4. Bota Fogo

Phase VI

Jive

  1. Simple Spin
  2. Whip Spin (Variation of whip and above)
  3. Curly Whip (Variation of whip)
  4. Rolling Off the Arm
  5. Flea Hop (Hop puts it near end)
  6. Coca Rola (Rolling of body puts it at end)

Cha Cha and Rumba

  1. Turkish Towel (Belongs in Phase V)
  2. Ballerina Wheel (Belongs in Phase V)
  3. Advanced Hip Twist
  4. Advanced Sliding Door
  5. Advanced Alemana (The turn to fc other direction more difficult than advanced sliding door)
  6. Full Natural Top (Length of figure)
  7. Continuous Top (Variation of above)
  8. Curl & Develope (Control and balance)
  9. Spiral (From multi-level needed before next figure)
  10. Rope Spin
  11. Follow My Leader (From multi-rhythm, length of figure)
  12. Gazpacho Timing
  13. 4 & 1 timing
