Teaching Beginners
CALLERLAB
-
Teaching newcomers to square dance is more than teaching the names and definitions of the figures.
- Teaching people to listen
- Showing how to find position in relationship to others
- Styling and Manners
- Indoctrination of ideals
- Historical background
-
Callers too often set up dancers for failure.
- Repetition of choreography patterns
- Teaching easy part first
- Using the short cut instead of the definition
- Showing a move but not calling it repeatedly
-
Teaching information sometimes forgotten.
- People learn in different ways (audio/visual)
- Attention span and length of tip
- Frustration limit
- Humor and anecdotes are helpful
- Keep your cool
- Let the dancers know the caller/teacher is human
- Work a pattern directionally that relates to the next figure to be learned
- Make each lesson as much like a dance as possible
- Encourage questions; especially in the breaks
- Use your angels if you have them
- Teach harder material earlier in the evening
-
Prepare dancers for the world.
- Mention dance programs
- Tell about local associations and CALLERLAB
- Bring sample magazines
- Get someone to give sewing information for outfits
- Tell dancers how to re-form and get back in
- Describe "defensive" dancing
- Give information about available dances and encourage participation!
