Teaching Progression for Jive (Phases III through VI)

Presented by:

URDC Teacher's Seminar, 1986

We are learning that a skillful teacher has many techniques at his command. An extremely effective method involves "Teaching Progression". When teaching a skill it is best to offer practical application as a major part of the instruction. Theory is also helpful and interesting, but actually performing the necessary actions that make up the entire skill provides the firm base needed for competent performance. The teaching of dancing requires that the student receive a clear understanding of the "basic" figures and necessary body mechanics before progressing to the more difficult figures and a higher level of dance competence. It is with this thought in mind that we are presenting the following Teaching Progression for Jive from low-intermediate to the advanced level. We hope that you will find this suggested teaching order helpful with future dance classes and choreography.
